Vấn đề và Giải pháp

Problem

Wood is Hygroscopic — Moisture is Enemy #1

Wood absorbs/releases moisture with environment, causing shrinkage, warping, and cracking when RH changes exceed 10%. White mold grows above 70% RH, destroying aesthetics and the export value of wooden furniture.

CEMACOSG Solution

How CEMACOSG solves this

Desiccant Solution for Timber and Wood Product Exports to the US, EU, and Japan

Wood is a hygroscopic biological material — its cellular structure continuously exchanges moisture with the surrounding environment until equilibrium moisture content (EMC) is reached. When finished wood products (furniture, engineered flooring, doors, plywood panels) are container-stuffed for export without adequate moisture control, the consequences include warping, cracking, surface mould, and finish delamination — all grounds for foreign buyers to reject shipments or demand compensation. CEMACOSG supplies moisture control solutions at every stage from factory floor to container, helping wood manufacturers maintain EMC at 8–12% throughout the supply chain.

Recommended Products

For finished furniture and flooring in export containers on long-haul tropical routes, 1,000g hanging powder desiccant (CaCl₂, absorbing up to 200% of weight) combined with Silica Gel 100g–500g placed inside cartons delivers optimal protection. For lumber and plywood in medium- to long-term warehouse storage, Clay 50g–100g within stacked packaging or Clay 500g–1,000g hanging warehouse format is the cost-efficient choice. Silica Gel granules should not be placed directly against unfinished wood surfaces as they may scratch fine surface finishes.

Compliance Standards

  • ISPM 15 (International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15) — international phytosanitary standard requiring heat treatment (HT) or methyl bromide fumigation for solid wood packing materials; CEMACOSG desiccants use non-woven PP or paper packaging and are therefore outside the scope of ISPM 15.
  • CARB (California Air Resources Board) Phase 2 — mandates formaldehyde emission limits for composite wood panels exported to the US; Silica Gel desiccants emit no formaldehyde and do not affect compliance for MDF/HDF products.
  • ISO 9001:2015 — production process and batch traceability certification.
  • FSC / PEFC chain-of-custody — CEMACOSG does not directly certify desiccants under FSC/PEFC, but the products do not interfere with or compromise the chain-of-custody documentation of certified wood shipments.

Dosage Reference

Recommended quantities for wood cargo: 100-litre carton (finished wood products): minimum 20–30g of Silica Gel or Clay. 20ft container of furniture: 10–15 units of 1kg Silica Gel or 6–10 units of 1,000g hanging powder desiccant. 40ft container: 18–25 units of 1kg Clay or 12–18 units of 1,000g powder desiccant. If measured EMC exceeds 12% before stuffing, increase desiccant quantity by 30–40% or dry the timber further before loading. Engineered flooring is more moisture-sensitive than solid wood: add one 50g Silica Gel packet per carton of 5–10 planks.

Standard Packing Procedure

  1. Measure wood moisture content before container stuffing — use a resistance-type moisture meter; timber for US/EU export should be at EMC 6–8% (Asia-Pacific domestic 10–12%). Do not stuff containers when EMC exceeds 14%.
  2. Insert paper or PE film between wood layers — reduces direct surface contact and creates a moisture-buffering zone between boards.
  3. Hang 1,000g desiccant units along container walls — distribute evenly on both side walls and at the container ends; supplement with smaller units interleaved between bundles.
  4. Line the container with insulating liner if the route crosses large temperature differential zones — reduces direct Container Rain condensation on wood surfaces.
  5. Label and document moisture readings — record measured EMC before stuffing, along with desiccant type and quantities in the packing list, to support cargo insurance claims if required.
